What is “Éducation autour de la culture”?
Since 2022, this cultural education project mobilizes the transmission of endogenous arts of Burkina Faso as a catalyst for:
1) enhancing the education and personal development of primary and secondary school children of Bobo Dioulasso;
2) attracting professional artists to specialize in teaching and youth leadership; and
3) training an upcoming generation of socially-oriented administrative professionals through intensive, hands-on internships in cultural administration.
Why?
Our Theory of Change
Si les marmites de bas ne sont pas bien posées, celles d’en haut ne peuvent pas s’arrêter.
“If the bottom pots are not well placed, those on top won’t stay upright”
Engagement and motivation are the two key concepts of this project. In this context, engagement is defined as active participation in the implementation or smooth running of the « Education through Culture » project, which aims to promote and transmit indigenous cultural values. As for motivation, we refer to the inspiration that drives children to actively participate in project activities and, in doing so, immerse themselves in their culture. We consider engagement and motivation to be linked to the children’s experience of empathy and their sense of belonging to the group. A sense of belonging is defined as each child feeling respected, accepted, valued, and integrated within the group. Empathy, meanwhile, is the collective capacity to understand and share the feelings of others. In society, a distinction is made between a child who participates in cultural activities and one who does not. Ensuring a child’s cultural and artistic development requires a tailored training process, a suitable environment, experienced instructors, and the necessary tools. However, it is also essential that the children recognize the importance of the indigenous values transmitted through the project and make them their own. The annual process of creating and performing an original multidisciplinary theatrical work is a culminating opportunity for participating children to do this.
Structural Context
One inspiration for starting this project came from Hamadou’s and Lila’s observations of the cultural sector in Burkina Faso over many years of involvement and research.
Burkina Faso’s cultural sector is internationally recognized for its richness and diversity, boasting numerous professional artists who showcase the country on the global stage. Current national education policy emphasizes indigenous culture, national languages, and cultural identity. Realizing a durable and effective coordination between the cultural and national education sectors is a long-term goal. Thus, the challenge we aim to address through the « Education through Culture is to forge a bridge between the cultural sector and the national education system, in line with the government’s current policy vision. The ambition of the « Education through Culture » program is to provide the new generation with the resources to fully identify with their culture, fostering a strong sense of cultural identity. To ensure high-quality, child-appropriate instruction, it is essential that artist-educators receive pedagogical training. This will enable them to deliver a well-structured, long-term artistic curriculum. Regarding the implementation, communication, and management of the « Education through Culture » program, it is crucial that young cultural administrators receive training in scientific research and equip themselves with the tools necessary to effectively carry out the project’s various tasks.
Who we are
Artistic Directors

Hamadou (Burkina Faso) a storyteller, marionettist, actor, educator, cultural administrator, youth organizer (among other hats), has been working in the arts and cultural milieu in Burkina Faso since the early 2000s. Lila (USA), a dance artist, organizer, and PhD candidate in anthropology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has been researching the professionalization of dancing in Burkina Faso since 2009. When Lila moved to Bobo in 2022 to conduct dissertational field research, the two initiated a project together that is difficult to fit into one categorical “box”: what gives the project its shape is Hamadou’s and Lila’s joint commitment to collaboration, and their joint understanding of “arts” practices as potent contexts for the cultivation of human values and self-realization within a collective cultural formation of integrity.
